How Will You Measure Your Life?

Beyond what you learn in school is how you will act during a moment of adversity. Today's talk is a glimpse into one SJSU alumnus and how he acted during a moment of adversity involving his discoveryof a massive fraud. He will describe the personal and professional experiences that enabled him to rise to the ethical challenge he faced.

Speaker:

Richard OkumotoRichard Okumoto: Mr. Okumoto has over 30 years of management experience in the technology industry. He has operational experience as a CEO, CFO, and Division GM. He has Board governance experience in public, private, and non-profit companies. In addition to his industry experience he has been a Lecturer in the Lucas Graduate School of Business for 5 years.

Mr. Okumoto is a current Board member of LifeVantage (a public company), Vantage Technology (an angel-funded start-up),and CET (a large Vocational training non-profit). He holds a BS degree from SJSU, an MA degree from Gonzaga University, and the RFC ® designation. He is also a member of NACD - National Association of Corporate Directors.

Anne T. Lawrence: Dr. Lawrence is Professor of Organization and Management at San Jose State University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University.

Prof. Lawrence is the lead author of Business and Society: Stakeholders, Ethics, Public Policy, 14th edition (Irwin/McGraw-Hill, forthcoming 2014). She is the former president and a fellow of the North American Case Research Association. Her articles and cases on issues of corporate social and environmental responsibility and business ethics have appeared in many journals, textbooks, and anthologies.

 rita manningRita Manning: Dr. Manning is a Professor of Philosophy at San Jose State University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. Professor Manning have over 30 years experience as a college professor developing and teaching a wide range of courses in ethics including Business Ethics, Ethical Theory, Environmental Ethics and Bioethics.

She is the author of 3 books including A Practical Guide to Ethics: Living and Leading with Integrity (co-authored with Scott Stroud), over 30 journal publications, and dozens of presentations to a wide range of academic and professional groups.

 

ron schirleRon Schirle: Ron began his career with Ernst & Young San Jose, California in 1982 after receiving an undergraduate degree in accounting and an MBA from San Jose State University. Ron has over 30 years experience in Ernst & Young's assurance practice serving technology clients in all stages of development.

Ron has served clients in the semiconductor and technology sectors including Intel Corporation, Linear Technology, Texas Instruments, Hotels.com, Match.com, EDS, Dell Computers as well as numerous public and private emerging growth companies. Ron has broad experience and expertise in consulting with technology-driven companies concerning mergers and acquisitions, ongoing SEC filings, initial public offerings, and secondary offerings, as well as accounting consultation services and Section 404 consultation services.
