COMM Graduation FAQs

When and where is the ceremony?

Thursday, May 24, 2012, 5-7pm, Morris Dailey Auditorium, Tower Hall, with the reception 7-8pm on North Tower Lawn.

How do I sign up to participate?

You'll complete the Registration Form (posted after spring break) and submit it with your cash payment to the Communication Studies Department office, HGH 108, April 4 - April 23 ($50, early registration) or April 24 - May 7, 4pm ($65, late registration).

How do I get my photo and caption in the graduation ceremony slide show?

After turning in your Registration Form and payment, send your photo (in .jpg format) and message of no more than 140 characters (including your name, text, and spaces) to commgrad2012@gmail.com by Monday, May 14. Title your photo Your last name_photo.jpg as with Smith_photo.jpg. The slide show will be projected on a large screen in the auditorium, so make sure you send a high-quality photo.

I'm participating in the ceremony. When should I arrive?

No later than one hour (so 4pm) before the ceremony to complete your name card and prepare for the ceremony. Go to North Tower Lawn (north side of Tower Hall, facing the Quad and Clark Hall) to check in when you arrive.

What should I wear?

Graduating students must wear the appropriate SJSU-approved academic regalia. The tassel color for the College of Social Sciences is cream. The Spartan Bookstore Graduation Center opens April 3 (call 408-924-1817). Purchase your bachelor's regalia (cap, gown, tassel) or master's regalia (cap, gown, hood & tassel) by April 30. Don't wait until the last minute!

Is there a reception?

Yes. The reception will be on the North Tower Lawn immediately following the ceremony.

Who may participate?

Students receiving either a BA in Communication Studies in Fall 2011, Spring 2012 or Summer 2012. M.A. students must have completed the oral defense of their culminating experience before the ceremony.

What is the cost to participate in the ceremony? What do I get?

The basic ceremony package is $50 (early registration) or $65 (late registration) and includes:

Can I buy addition tickets? Where do I buy them?

Yes. You can buy up to 4 additional tickets at $10/each when you register for the ceremony. Starting May 14, if there are any more tickets available, you'll be able to buy them on a a first-come, first-served basis at the Department office, HGH 108. Update: We no extra tickets. Post requests for extra tickets (and if you have tickets you don't need) on the ticket exchange page: commgraduation.blogspot.com.

Do I need to buy a ticket for a child who is attending?

Yes, for children over 2, you'll need a ticket. For children 2 and under who will sit on an adult's lap, no ticket is needed. Note that strollers are not allowed in the aisles due to fire regulations.

Will tickets be available at the door?

No.

Can I pay with check, debit, or credit card?

No, cash only.

What if my guests decide to attend the ceremony at the last minute?

They must have tickets to attend the ceremony. No one will be admitted to Morris Dailey Auditorium or the reception without a ticket. (This is in compliance with Fire Marshal regulations.)

What if my guests need special accommodations for seating?

If you have guests who need extra time to get seated or use a wheelchair for mobility, please contact Dr. David Terry at David.Terry@sjsu.edu so that we can arrange for appropriate seating. Also plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before the ceremony and go to the North Tower Door (where the check-in station is for students).

Will there be a professional photography at the ceremony?

There will be a professional photographer taking pictures during the ceremony. This will include a photo of each graduating student as you accept your diploma. Information about purchasing these photos will be available when you check in before the ceremony.

Are balloons allowed in Morris Dailey Auditorium?

No, balloons are not allowed in the auditorium.
