Teaching Associates are assigned to teach one section of COMM 20, Public Speaking. These sections typically meet Monday and Wednesday. TAs are also required to enroll in COMM 285A (Teaching Practicum) for two units of credit in their first semester as a teaching associate; they will enroll in two units of COMM 285B in the second semester as a teaching associate. COMM 285A and COMM 285B requirements include providing one solo-taught or two team-taught workshops per semester through the COMM Lab. The department provides, and requires teaching associate attendance at a one-week training workshop (five days x eight hours) in the week prior to the start of Fall semester, as well as 1-2 shorter, late afternoon or evening sessions earlier in the summer.
The application deadline for Teaching Associate positions for 2009-2010 is March 13, 2009. Students must be admitted to the Communication Studies M.A. program to serve as a Teaching Associate.
