Classified Standing
Admission as a classified graduate student in communication studies requires that the applicant present the following materials to the Graduate Coordinator in addition to those specified as necessary by the University for post baccalaureate study:
- At least two letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant's readiness for advanced academic study.
- Evidence of the applicant's success in his or her undergraduate major. Normally, this would entail showing at least a 3.0 average (on a 4.0) scale in upper division courses in the applicant's major.
- Evidence of readiness for advanced study in speech communication as shown by either a bachelor's degree in the field or other appropriate course work. At a minimum, students must present upper division course work in three areas: (a) introduction to the speech communication field, (b) social-behavioral-empirical research methods, and (c) rhetoric and criticism.
- A writing sample the follows these guidelines:
- Prepare a personal statement of approximately 1000 words addressing:
- your reason for wanting to pursue the M.A. in Communication Studies
- your goals and expectations for graduate study, and
- your relevant professional and academic experience.
Be sure to indicate a particular interest or interests in communication studies that draws you to graduate study in this field. You may cite sources (in APA or MLA style) where appropriate.
