If the applicant lacks courses necessary for successful graduate work in the department, the Graduate Coordinator will specify upper division courses necessary to remove any such deficiencies in preparation. Many of our students have not graduated with the bachelor's degree in communication or hold degrees from communication departments that are highly specialized. If this is the case, the Graduate Coordinator may need to assign upper division course work to prepare the student for the integrative and comprehensive approach to communication found in San José State's Department of Communication Studies.
