Graduate Program Advising

Meet with the Graduate Coordinator early in your studies to discuss your interests, possible coursework, and mentoring. The Graduate Coordinator will help you identify a member of the Communication Studies graduate faculty to serve as your mentor in advance of establishing your thesis, examination, or committee.

You should discuss with your mentor and with the Graduate Coordinator a possible committee to oversee your thesis (for Plan A), your comprehensive examination (for Plan B1), or your special project (for Plan B2).

For Plan A (thesis) students, the first step in assembling a thesis committee is to choose an advisor. Once you have found a member of the graduate faculty to serve as your thesis advisor, you can work with your advisor to assemble an appropriate thesis committee (of at least three members).

For Plan B1 (comprehensive examination) students should discuss with their advisors what might be an appropriate examining committee to conduct a written and oral examination covering at least three areas of communication studies. In all cases, thesis and examining committees must be approved by the departmental Graduate Committee.

For Plan B2 (special project option) students should discuss with their advisors what might be an appropriate special project. In all cases, your project must be approved by the departmental Graduate Committee.
