At any one time, the Department of Communication Studies hosts around 70 master's degree students, some of whom are just beginning their studies while others have advanced to master's candidacy and are working to complete their culminating experience. About half of our students have completed an undergraduate major in speech, speech communication, or communication studies. Other students have either minored in communication or hold a B.A. degree in some other arts and sciences field such as English, journalism, sociology, psychology, or theater.
About a third of our students are entering graduate study relatively soon after completion of the bachelor's degree. The majority, however, are returning to the academic world after a hiatus of several years. Most graduate students in communication studies work to support themselves either with a full-time or part-time job. This is why most of our graduate classes and seminars are scheduled for evening times. In addition, many of our graduate students are employed in the department as teaching associates. TAs teach general education courses and are supervised by the TA Coordinator, Dr. Deanna Fassett. Most of our graduate students are attracted by the opportunity to mix theory and practice. Many hold marketing, market research, personnel, training, or general management positions in Silicon Valley and seek to upgrade their credentials. Many wish to earn a master's degree so that they may teach on the community college level. Many wish to hone specific skills that will allow them to practice as independent consultants. A number of our students anticipate advanced doctoral study and have selected our program because we concentrate on our master's students, giving them a complete foundation for further study.
