Dr. Stephanie Coopman presented on "The Future of the Learning Management System II: The Challenge of the Cloud" at the University of Southern California's Center for Scholarly Technology on October 16. The presentation, based on Dr. Coopman's First Monday article, "A Critical Examination of Blackboard's E-learning Environment," is available online at the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences media capture site.

Dr. Ted M. Coopman presented a competitively-selected paper, "Networks as Infrastructures of Dissent: Applying a New Theory of Collective Action," at the 10th annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers conference held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, October 7-10, 2009. Dr. Coopman also was elected to AoIR's Executive Committee for a two-year term.

Dr. Rona Halualani's 2008 article, “'Where exactly is the Pacific?':  Global Migrations, Diasporic Movements, and Intercultural Communication," published in the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, 1 (1), 3-22, was just awarded the 2009 Outstanding Journal Article Award by the International and Intercultural Communication Division, National Communication Association.

Dr. Rona Halualani and M.A. students Hugh Haiker and Christopher Lancaster had their article, "Mapping Diversity Efforts as Inquiry," accepted by the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management, a top-tier international journal.

Dr. Stephen Hinerman was interviewed and quoted for a story on media scandals published in NOW Magazine. The article, "Flaws of Attraction," focused on why audiences are drawn to celebrity scandals and how media coverage influences perceptions of those celebrities.

Dr. Matthew Spangler's play Kite Runner was performed last spring at the San Jose Repertory Theatre and more recently at the Arizona Theatre Company (Tucson and Phoenix).  It was called an an "Exquisitely Chiseled Adaptation" by the San Jose Mercury News, "Glorious" by the San Francisco Chronicle, and a "Soaring Success" by the Tucson Weekly. Khaled Hosseini is the author of the novel.

Dr. Mathew Spangler just published his article, "Winds of Change: Immigration, Bloomsday, and 'Aeolus' in Street Theatre," in the James Joyce Quarterly. He also a forthcoming article in Text and Performance Quarterly titled "Performing Intercultural Hybridity: Alain Destandau's Antigone Viet Nam at the Hue Festival." In addition, he has a book chapter, "Performing the Troubles: Murals and the Spectacle of Commemoration at Free Derry Corner," in Performing the Crossroads: Critical Essays in Performance Studies and Irish Culture (Palgrave, 2009).

Dr. Shawn Spano published two book chapters in 2009. The first, titled the "The Multiple Faces of the Public Dialogue Consortium: Scholars, Practitioners, and Dreamers of Better Social Worlds," appears in the Handbook of Applied Communication (edited by Larry Frey and Ken Cissna and published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates). The chapter, co-authored with Barnett Pearce and Kim Pearce, is featured in the Handbook as one of only four "Exemplary Programs in Applied Communication Research." The second chapter is titled "Creating Opportunities for Social construction: The Albuquerque Summer Institute." It is the introductory chapter in the book Socially Constructing Communication edited by Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz and Gloria Galanes, published by Hampton Press and co-authored with Karen Foss and Kris Kirschbaum.

Dr. Federico Varona represented the Communication Studies Department at the 13th Latin American Social Communication Schools Congress of FELAFACS, October 19-22, 2009, in Havana, Cuba.

Dr. Federico Varona presented the Conference Opening Remarks at the 5th Conference of Communication Scholars of the Americas, October 22, 2009, in Havana, Cuba. Dr. Varona serves as chair of the organization's Steering Committee. The conference theme was "Communication Training Across the Americas."

Dr. Andrew Wood has been invited to present the keynote address at the Rocky Mountain Communication Association's 2010 conference on April 17th at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. His talk will engage the RMCA conference theme, "Communication in an age of Convergence." Professor Wood was asked to present this keynote in recognition for his boundary-blurring work in topics ranging from online communication to popular culture to the publication of his newest book, City Ubiquitous: Place, Communication, and the Rise of Omnitopia.

Dr. Andrew Wood's book, City Ubiquitous: Place, Communication, and the Rise of Omnitopia, published by Hampton Press, is a recipient of the 2009 Urban Communication Association's Jane Jacobs Award.
