Social Media Team

COMM Social Media Team Logo

Founded in 2013, the Communication Studies Social Media Team operates the COMM Central Network (CCN), which is a network of social media websites (including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, Instagram, and Tumblr) and the COMM Central Canvas site that serves as our hub. The COMM Central site has a variety of features and information for COMM majors, minors, and graduate students. The team also publishes COMM Events, the weekly department newsletter.

The CCN is affiliated with the COMM Network Club, a registered student organization, whose mission is to promote professional experience and training in the use of new media and social media in service to the Department of Communication Studies and its students, alumni, and faculty.

Serving on the Social Media Team fulfills the COMM 198 Activity requirements (Credit/No Credit). Typically, students take one unit per semester for two concurrent terms. If students wish to continue working on the team, there is a potential for earning independent study units. You don't have to be a COMM major or minor to join the team.

The CCN functions as a social media start-up, providing students with a professional level experience in new media/social media fields. Students are expected to help execute the department's integrated social media strategy. Still, students are given broad autonomy to pursue their assigned tasks. When possible, students are assigned tasks in which they are specifically interested. Students are expected to:

• Meet online with the faculty advisor once at the start of the semester

• Post their accomplishments weekly

• Take direction from their immediate student manager and the network’s director

• Attend online training and development workshops as required

Participating in the COMM social media team is less about meeting the requirements for your degree and more about gaining valuable experience in the field and building your résumé. This experience can put you a step ahead of other applicants. You'll learn new skills and expand your knowledge base, serve our program, and have fun.

One challenge with the social media team is that there is more interest than space. Therefore, enrollment in the Communication Studies Social Media Team is competitive.

To apply to the social media team, email the faculty advisor, Professor Stephanie Coopman [stephanie.coopman@sjsu.edu] for an application.
