Early Summer Study Abroad in Finland
May 27-June 13
Earn three units of credit applicable to your SJSU degree while studying—in English—with other international students in the beautiful lakeside of Jyväskylä, Finland on the campus of JAMK University of Applied Sciences. Learn about Jyväskylä at www.jkl.fi/international/visiting
Courses are especially designed for students in Business and Communication Studies, but all majors are invited to join. All courses are taught in English. Certain courses qualify to meet SJSU GE Area V. More information about courses below.
JAMK classes meet Monday through Thursday. Students will select two courses to earn 3 units of academic credit at SJSU.
The program fee is $2,000 per student, which includes:
- All course fees at JAMK (will earn 3 units of transfer credit for SJSU)
- Student housing in JAMK dorms
- Local bus pass, and transfers from Helsinki airport to Jyväskylä and return
Note that airfare is NOT included in the price.
“Host” students from JAMK hospitality program will assist throughout with orientation, hospitality, and social events on evenings and weekends. Daily free time activities in Jyväskylä include guided tours, beach parties on the lake, outdoor games, etc.
Optional student weekend tours are NOT included. Students may choose (and pay separately for) round trips from Jyväskylä to:
- Helsinki–Tallinn (Estonia), June 1-3 (approx. $330)
- Stockholm (Sweden), June 8-10 (approx. $375)
- St. Petersburg (Russia), June 15-18 (approx. $600)
$500 non-refundable deposit for the program is required by Monday March 22, 2013.
Program Co-Directors Deanna L. Fassett (Professor, Communication Studies) and Minna Holopainen (Lecturer, Communication Studies) will hold 30-minute information sessions on:
- Thursday, February 28 at 1:30-2:00 p.m. in HGH 215
- Monday, March 4 at 3:00-3:30 p.m. in HGH 215
- Thursday, March 7 at 10:30-11:00 a.m. in HGH 215

Complete 2 courses for equivalent 3 units of SJSU credit:
- Becoming a Peak Performance Professional (3 ECTS)
- Creative Leadership (3 ECTS)
- Leading Powerful Innovation Teams (3 ECTS)
- Management de la Innovación/Creativity Management (held both in Spanish and English) (3 ECTS)
- Experience Design in Tourism (3 ECTS)
- Destination Branding (3 ECTS)
- Sport and Event Marketing (3 ECTS)
- Europe as a Market Area (3 ECTS)
- International Business Speaking (3 ECTS)
- Business Culture and Language in Spain and Latin America (3 ECTS) **
- Russian Culture and Language (3 ECTS) **
**These two courses together will satisfy SJSU GE Area V
Communication Studies Majors
Any two of these courses will count toward the Practice area:
- Becoming a Peak Performance Professional
- Creative Leadership
- International Business Speaking
- Leading Effective Innovation Teams
Taking these two courses will count toward the Foundations area:
- Business Culture and Language in Spain and Latin America (3 ECTS)
- Russian Culture and Language (3 ECTS)
Business Majors
Business students can substitute SJSU courses as follows:
- “Leading Powerful Innovation Teams” and “Management de la Innovación/Creativity Management” for BUS 181
- “Business Culture and Language in Spain and Latin America” and “Russian Culture and Language” for BUS 162
