Study Abroad in Finland, Summer 2016

Earn up to six units of credit toward your SJSU degree while studying – in English – with international students at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JAMK).

Courses are especially designed for students in communication studies and business, but all majors are invited to join.

Setting: Beautiful and Accessible

The program is based in Jyväskylä: a safe, friendly, lakeside city in central Finland. From there you have easy access to all major European destinations: Paris, Berlin, Rome – all just a quick plane flight away.

Courses: Practical and Applicable

SJSU students typically take two courses during a three-week period. Those courses together will transfer as three SJSU units.

In 2016, JAMK will offer these courses:

  • Managing Dynamic Innovation Teams
  • Global Team Leadership
  • Nordic Business Culture and Communication**
  • Creativity Management
  • Business Ethics
  • Sport and Tourism Management
  • International Business Speaking
  • Russian Culture and Language**
  • Europe as a Market Area
  • Destination Branding
  • Future Trends in Tourism

Are you a COMM Major? Any of these courses can be applied toward FIP requirements.

Majoring elsewhere? Chat with your major advisor about which courses might be applied towards your major [and ask us about agreements we’ve already made with some departments].

Need SJSU Area V GE Credit? Courses followed by the ** symbol can meet that requirement as well!

4-6 units In addition to JAMK coursework, students will enroll in either 1 or 3 units of COMM 180, Activity Projects in Intercultural/International Communication. This is an online course taught by COMMSA faculty designed to complement your study abroad.

Costs: Less than $5,000 for a Lifetime of Memories

The Finland Program is about $2500; this includes program fees, courses, lodging, and some entertainment and travel expenses. You will also need to budget for airfare (usually between $1000-$1500) and food.

Worried about the expense? Financial aid is available for students who take at least six units during the summer. There are also some grants and scholarships available to help defray costs.

Side Trips: Tour Northern Europe!

Along with a host of free-time activities (including guided tours, beach parties, and nighttime events), you may also participate in weekend side trips throughout the Baltic region.

In 2015, JAMK University organized trips to the following cities:

  • Stockholm, Sweden (additional cost: about $400)
  • St. Petersburg, Russia (additional cost: about $700)

Participants also took self-guided weekend trips to Helsinki and Tampere, Finland; Tallinn, Estonia; London, England; and Santa's Village in Lapland. In addition, many students decide to extend their stay in Europe to spend more time exploring other countries and cultures.
