Major Requirements Pre Fall 2009

For Majors Who Started the Program Before Fall 2009

• The major is changing starting in Fall 2009!
• Make an appointment with an advisor to find out how these changes will affect you!

In the new major, which starts Fall 2009, all upper-division courses are 4 units. This means the Department will no longer offer 3-unit upper-division courses (with the exception of SJSU Studies courses). If you haven't already, meet with an advisor right away to chart out your program of study based on this key change in the major.

COMM Major Requirements Fall 2005-Summer 2009

Majors in the Department of Communication Studies at San José State University earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Students must meet with a major advisor within their first 3 semesters on campus. Meeting with a major advisor each semester will help keep you on track!

Majors must complete at least 42 units in communication studies as well as a minor or correlation of courses to earn the B.A. The requirements for the 42 units are:

Core Courses: 24 units

• COMM 101-Introduction to Communication Studies
  
• COMM 140-Argumentation and Debate
  
• COMM 149-Rhetoric and Public Life (may substitute COMM 145, Rhetorical and Cultural Criticism, or COMM 152, Communication in World Cultures)
  
• COMM 155-Quantitative Communication Inquiry
  
• COMM 156-Qualitative Communication Inquiry
  
• COMM 161-Communication and Culture (may substitute COMM 106, Language, Meaning, and Culture, or COMM 172, Multicultural Communication in the U.S.)
  
• COMM 198-Applied Activity in Communication (may substitute COMM 157, Community Concepts)
  
• COMM 199-Senior Seminar in Communication

Electives: 18 units

• Courses chosen by student with advisor's approval
• At least 9 units must be upper division (100-level)
  
• No courses used to satisfy Core (lower-division) G.E. may count toward the major
• Up to 6 units of SJSU Studies in COMM may count (e.g., COMM 100W, COMM 157, COMM 174)
  
• No more than 6 units may be CR/NC

Minor/Correlation of Courses

• Minor-determined by the department or unit in which you earn your minor (e.g., sociology, business, economics)
• Correlation-18 units, 12 of which must be upper division, taken in one or more departments outside Communication Studies. Consult with a major advisor to plan the correlation of courses.
