 Required

  • ●      Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from a regionally accredited university and licensed in the State of California or eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipated start date; or
  • ●      Master’s Degree in Social Work and licensed in the State of California or eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipated start date; or
  • ●      Graduate Degree in MFT and licensed in the State of California or eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipated start date; or
  • ●      Ed.D. in counselor education and licensed in the State of California or eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipated start date.

 

  • ●      Awareness of, sensitivity to, and knowledge in facilitating the personal and educational goals of a multicultural population;
  • ●      Demonstrated effectiveness in counseling work with a variety of racial/ethnic groups and diversities including multi-racial identity, socioeconomic status, gender, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, disabilities, religion, etc.;
  • ●      Delivery of personal counseling and prevention services in a college or university setting;
  • ●      Clinical experience with individuals, couples and groups;
  • ●      Clinical experience in using a brief therapy model;
  • ●      Experience and interest in providing innovative services, outreaches, and workshops in a community setting;
  • ●      Experience in providing consultation to various stakeholders;
  • ●      Strong clinical and crisis management skills;
  • ●      Knowledge and commitment to the application of the highest standards of legal and ethical principles in mental health practices
  • ●      Well-developed written and oral communication skills 
  • ●      Experienced in collaborating effectively with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
  • ●      Strong planning and organizational skills.

 

Preferred

  • ●      Strongly prefers candidate with demonstrated effectiveness in providing counseling with the diverse Latino/a population.
  • ●      Experience with prevention programs on college campuses targeting international students, veterans, LGBTQ-identified students, and addressing issues such as, prejudice, and social injustices, suicide, sexual assault, alcohol/drug use.
  • ●      Experience in providing counseling for mental health issues such as gender identity, autistic spectrum, and/or substance use.
  • ●      Experience in supervision and training of doctoral level trainees.
  • ●      Interest in integrating use of technology in counseling services.
  • ●      Commitment to assessment of counseling learning outcomes.

  Responsibilities

Candidates must address the mental health, educational and academic achievement needs of a student population of great diversity (i.e., ethnic, racial, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, transgendered, disability, socioeconomic status, immigration status, religious diversity, etc.). 

Successful candidates are expected to collaborate and work closely with other disciplines/departments, developing and implementing innovative services for the diverse student population.

Summary of Duties: Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the selected candidate is expected to provide a full range of clinical services, clinical supervision of trainees, and outreach services, collaborating with colleagues either within Counseling Services or across campus.

Clinical Services: Provide short-term counseling for students; provide crisis intervention, clinical assessment, and case management; conduct workshops, psycho-educational groups and group therapy; provide consultation regarding issues that affect the educational, vocational, developmental, and psychological well being of students in the university community; provide referrals to and consultation with educational counselors, Student Health Services’ professionals, and other campus faculty & staff; offer occasional evening or weekend outreach presentations, participate in rotation of after-hours coverage.

Outreach Services: Develop and participate in outreach programs to a metropolitan (largely commuter) campus community with a highly diverse student population; participate in the development and implementation of assigned outreach projects, e.g., class presentations, residence hall consultations.

Supervision:  As appropriate, provide clinical supervision to practicum trainees, pre-doctoral interns, or post-doctoral residents; co-facilitate outreach activities, workshops, and groups with all levels of supervisees; provide training and educational seminars for all levels of supervisees.

Service/Committee Work:  In keeping with the mission of an urban University, the necessity to relate to the regional area which the university serves, and consistent with the social justice emphasis of Counseling Services, faculty counselors are expected to serve on department, division, and University-level committees.

 

Salary and Benefits

Excellent benefits, including pension plan, health insurance, vision benefits, etc.  In the CSU system, counselors serve as members of the faculty and are represented by the faculty bargaining unit.  The position of tenure-track counselor faculty is classified as an SSPAR-1 AY and is equivalent to an assistant professor.  This is an Academic Year position (approximately 9 months).

Salary Range:         Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date:           August 19, 2013. (January 2013 is possible if candidate is available).
