Student Veterans

For many veterans, the transition from the demands of military life to those of the university can create a significant amount of stress. Moreover, that stress is multiplied and compounded for combat veterans returning from war-zones and is often immeasurable and overwhelming. Recent studies show that as many as 1 in 3 returning veterans have already or will experience one or more psychological conditions ranging from PTSD to severe depression. It is therefore important for all student veterans to be aware of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the offerings it can provide for our student veterans.  We offer a variety of services, including 1 on 1 counseling to address both educational and personal concerns, and variety of groups and workshops, including topics on anxiety, depression, relationships issues.  If there are enough interest, we would love to facilitate a support group for veterans as well.  Please contact us for more information.

Also of importance to note is that CAPS staff sits on the president’s Veterans Advisory Council (VAC).  Student veterans are encouraged to identify any specific missing psychological service that they feel would be of benefit to student veterans and to present that to CAPS staff (Dr. Richard Francisco). The staff will then provide that information to the VAC where it will be thoroughly explored. Other services for student veterans are found at: http://www.sjsu.edu/veterans/
