GEAR UP is a federally funded, state-administered program designed to stimulate interest in college attendance, awareness of college entrance requirements and knowledge about available financial aid by High school students.

In California, the San Jose State University is one of thirty-four Local GEAR UP Partnerships who work with three High schools to provide opportunities and support to students and their families.

The San Jose State University GEAR UP program develops and sustains the organizational capability of High schools to prepare all students for High school success and post-secondary education. Support is provided for the adults who influence and assist High school students, specifically their counselors, English and mathematics teachers, principals and families. Scholarships, based on academic success and financial need, will be provided for GEAR UP students going on to college.
