The application requirements and process are the same regardless of whether you apply to the Master's degree or Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) School Counseling Credential program.

Please note: If you are interested in obtaining both the Master's degree and PPS Credential, apply under the Master's degree option. Also, a Master's degree in Counseling or a related field is required to apply for a clear PPS School Counseling Credential.

Fall 2020 application cylce is October 1, 2019 to February 1, 2020.


Application Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in any subject. (For the PPS School Counseling Credential, the Bachelor's degree can be in any subject except for Education.) 
  2. 3.0 GPA or higher
  3. Satisfactory English competency (evaluated by department faculty through the Autobiographical and Professional Goals Statement)
  4. Commitment to human development services (evaluated by recommendation letters and Autobiographical and Professional Goals Statement)
  5. For international students, a TOEFL test score above 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) is required

Application Process

  • International students only: Take the TOEFL test and have ETS send your official TOEFL transcript to SJSU.
  • Apply online at CAL State Apply
  • Pay the $70.00 application fee on CAL State Apply.
  • Obtain one official sealed transcript from each college/university where you studied and submit the official sealed transcript(s) to:

  • Obtain three letters of recommendation: At least one letter should use the department's "Recommendation Letter Form." Letters of recommendation should be written in the semester applying.

  • Write an Autobiographical and Professional Goals Statement.
    • Should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, with one-inch margins and address the following:
      • Experiences and education that demonstrate your concern and capacity to work with people in addition to any specific experiences directly related to the education and/or counseling professions.
      • Your professional goals in pursuing the Master's degree and/or PPS School Counseling Credential, including any special areas of interest in counseling.
      • Any additional information that is relevant to your application to our program.

  • Check your application status online at OneSJSU (ID and PINs are provided shortly by SJSU's Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations Office after you submit your application via CAL State Apply.)
  • NOTE: After your application has been submitted to the university, it will be evaluated against the minimum university entrance criteria. If your application meets the requirements, it will be sent to our department for consideration. The total processing time is between five to six weeks after all necessary documents have been received by the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations Office, so we recommend that you submit your application early in the processing cycle.
