Requirements for M.A and PPS Credential
in Counselor Education:
To obtain the PPS Credential in Counselor
Education, you are required to complete 12 units of internship at two
school levels totaling 600 hours through EdCo 292 (http://sweeneyhall.sjsu.edu/eld/coed/292home.html).
EdCo 292 is not required for M.A candidates, but highly recommended.

Parents Helping
Parents (Project YEA!)
Project YEA is looking for advocates to help promote the educational right
of youth.
What is a YEA?
It is for individual and dependents of the Court, the YEA volunteer acts
in partnership with the parent or guardian to seek and monitor free appropriate
public education. The YEA volunteer is assigned by the YEA! Project staff
to participate in the IEP process.
Roles of the YEA Volunteer:
- Gathers and reviews information on eligibility
and assessments.
- Participates in planning meetings w/the
parent, probation officer, or social worker
- May meet with teacher to observe students
behavior or learning environment
- Participates as an active member of the
youths educational planning team
- Supports parent/youth in conflict resolution
efforts to educational services
- Monitors timely implementation of educational
plan and ongoing compliance
- Communicates compliance concerns to the
Project YEA! Staff to determine next steps
- Provides periodic updates to Project YEA!
Staff regarding case progress on behalf of the student.

Advent Group Ministries
Advent Group Ministries is a team of Christians with a mission of bringing
hope, healing and Christ's love to hurting children and their families.
We provide personal care through a professional staff of counselors and
social worker and a network of well trained volunteers. This program provides
help with transition into foster care programs, were we provide a full
spectrum of training, counseling, and financial assistance to our foster
parents. We also provide an innovative live-in-treatment program for chemically
dependent teenagers, and provide help for accompanying emotional disturbed
clients due to physical or sexual abuse. There is also a counseling program
that is staffed by licensed and trained professionals with focus on unifying
and strengthening troubled families.
What can you do?
People like you make a difference between providing minimal treatment
or offering the kind of intensive one-on-one help these at-risk kids and
families help.
To many of our children are living a nightmare. We need your help to give
them back their dreams.

GEAR UP
Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness For Undergraduate Programs
(Federally Funded Grant Awarded to San Jose State University in 2000)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The mission of The East Side GEAR UP Community
Achievement Project is to
Substantially increase the number of low-income students who are prepared
to enter and enroll in College. San Jose State University is the Fiscal
Agent for the Partnership Grant, which includes East Side Union High School
District, Alum Rock Elementary School District, and Franklin McKinley
School District. The program focuses on Counseling and Academics for students,
College Awareness and Workplace Skills for Parents and Professional Development
for Teachers.
We Started in January 2000 with the 7th grade
cohort of students from Fischer, JW Fair, Lee Mathson, and Sylvandale
Middle Schools. This year the students are enrolling in our four High
Schools: Andrew Hill, Independence, Overfelt, and Yerba Buena as 9th graders.
We will continue to provide them with academic and counseling services
through their 11th grade year of High School.
COMMUNITY ACADEMY:
Our Saturday Academy will be broken into
four 6-week sessions throughout the year. Our bell schedule will consist
of four 65-minute class periods with a 30-minute Lunch Break. We will
start around 8:00 am and end around 1:40pm.
PURPOSE:
Currently we are in search of EDCO 292 Student
Interns who would not only like to assist us in achieving our goals with
our students, but who are also interested in Counseling in public school
settings.
We strongly urge you to consider this unique
