The goal of Alum Rock Counseling Center's Ocala Mentoring Program is to empower youth ages 11-14 to avoid high-risk behaviors such as crime, drug use, adolescent pregnancy, and truancy. Students participate through their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, receiving mentoring, life skills classes, case management, and other supportive services. We pair 50 of our students with mentors in order to improve their academic and future successes by offering one-on-one mentoring with a volunteer from the community.

Becoming a mentor is one of the most beneficial ways to use your volunteer time. Mentors help their mentees seek out positive role models and safe recreational activities. They help youth realize their full potential and influence youth to make healthier choices that lead to physical, social, and emotional wellness. Mentoring activities can range from hanging out at school, going to the park or mall, attending a baseball game, tutoring at the library, visiting a local university, watching a movie, and more--whatever you are capable of, interested in sharing, and will ultimately benefit your mentee.

We are asking for a commitment to mentor for at least one year, from whenever you are matched until a year later, and for 6 hours of mentoring to happen a month which can be a combination of in person outings, phone communication, and group activities. We expect mentors and mentees to talk weekly and see each other in person once a month. The mentoring happens outside of school hours, based on the schedule of the mentor and mentee, which usually occurs after school in the afternoons or evenings on weekedays, or on the weekends.

If you are interested and would like more information please contact: Celina Chun, Volunteer Coordinator, at cchun@alumrockcc.org or 408-910-0446. Be the difference in a youth's life and mentor!

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Celina
