Gear Up Project Goals:

    The purpose of the project is to maximize community resources in an effort to prepare students for entering college. Over a period of six years, we will provide significant support to assist students to plan and be prepared for college study.

Gear Up Program:

| Counseling | Mentoring | Tutoring |

Counseling

    Bilingual counselors, social services interns and community mental health counselors will be placed in schools and will provide intensive individualized and multicultural counseling and family counseling services. Counselors will prepare a counseling and student services plan for each student based on the results from the student Services Needs Assessment and individual counseling interviews.  Counselors will meet with individual students at least once a semester to ensure student needs are met and all students are served.   

Mentoring

    The mentoring program is a critical component of the proposed project which are detailed and planned based on guidelines from Yes, You Can: Establishing a Mentoring Program to Prepare You for College, (1999) a publication from the U.S. department of Education.  As addressed in the objective, the mentoring program will be coordinated as a collaborated effort among the all partnership institutions.  A full time coordinator at the school district will be responsible to ensure the quality of implementation of the designed the mentor program.

Tutoring

    The services will be provided to support basic school subject learning.  Tutors for the project will include the programs of the YWCA, SJSU Upward Bond and pre-service teachers from the Department of Teacher Education and department of Special Education at SJSU.  Eight bilingual tutors in English and Math will be recruited and trained to tutor student participants four hours a week throughout the school year at the project After School Academy.
