Accreditation and Assessment
The SJSU Computer Science Department has programs that lead to the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science (BSCS) and the Master of Science degree in Computer Science (MSCS). Together with the Department of Computer Engineering, it also has a program that leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering (BSSE).
Our Bachelor's degree in Computer Science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD21202-4012 - telephone: (410) 347-7700.
The MSCS program is accredited by WASC and soon the BSSE program will apply for ABET accreditation.
To receive and maintain ABET accreditation a program must meet several general criteria. Among them:
Continuous Improvement: The program uses a documented process to regularly assess its objectives and outcomes and to evaluate the extent to which they are being achieved. The results of the evaluations are documented and used to effect continuous improvement through a documented plan.
The Computer Science Department has had an official assessment process in place since 2005, however starting in Fall 2009 there have been significant changes. See Assessment Legacy for a description of the processes and products prior to these changes.
This web site describes the continuous improvement processes used by the computer science department.
