|Important Dates to Remember____________Spring 2007

Jan. 5: Last day for December 2006 graduates to submit MA and MFA thesis copies for binding.

Feb. 15: Deadline for May 2006 graduates to file or reactivate application for graduation at the Graduate Studies Office.

Feb. 15: Deadline for August 2006 graduates to submit approved official programs (Request for Candidacy) to Graduate Studies. See your advisor.

Mar. 2: Deadline for May graduates to submit MA or MFA thesis to second and third readers.

Mar. 9: Deadline for December graduates to sign up to take the MA and MFA Comprehensive Exams. (Also May graduates who have not passed the exam or received the Advisor's permission to take it late).

Mar. 31: Deadline for May graduates to submit approved thesis to Graduate Studies.

Apr. 2: TA and GA applications for Fall 2007 due.

Apr. 2: Deadline for December 2006 graduates to submit approved official programs (Request for Candidacy) to Graduate Studies. See your advisor.

Apr. 2: Deadline to submit thesis proposals (fall 299 credits) to Grad. Committee.

Apr. 5: Deadline for May graduates to submit approved thesis to Graduate Studies.

April 6: MFA Comprehensive exam distributed, 9:00 a.m. DUE: April 9, 5:00 p.m., in the English & Comparative Literature Department office.

April 6: Deadline for Phelan Awards and Other Creative Writing Awards, SJSU English & Comparative Literature Department office, 12:00 Noon.

Apr. 7: MA Comprehensive Exam, Part 1, 9-12 AM, FO 104

Apr. 9: MFA Comprehensive Exam due (5 PM).

Apr. 14: MA Comprehensive Exam, Part 2, 9-12 AM, FO 104

Jun. 8: Deadline for August 2007 graduates to file or reactivate application for graduation at the Graduate Studies Office.

April 3: Booker Prize-winning novelist Kiran Desai, (2007 Martha Heasley Cox Lecturer presented by the Center for Literary Arts Major Authors Series), author of Inheritance of Loss, 7:30 p.m., University Theater, Fifth & San Fernando. Free admission.

April 4: A Conversation with Booker-Prize winning novelist Kiran Desai (2007 Martha Heasley Cox Lecturer, presented by the Center for Literary Arts Major Authors Series), 12:00 Noon, Engineering Building Auditorium (Rm. 189).  Free admission.

April 5: “In the Spirit of Markham and Bland,” a reading featuring California Poet Laureate Al Young, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., MLK, Jr. Library, Rms. 225-229. Free admission.

April 12: James D. Houston, 2006 Lurie Chair, reads from his new novel Bird of Another Heaven, (Co-sponsored by the MLK, Jr. Library’s “First Thursday” series and the Center for Literary Arts), 7:30 p.m., Rms. 225 – 229 MLK, Jr. Library. Free Admission.

April 21: A Celebration of SJSU Poets: Past, Present, & Future, sponsored by the SJSU Poets & Writers Coalition and Poetry Center San Jose, featuring 31 student, alumni, and past and present faculty poets, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., Spartan Memorial Chapel. Free admission. 

April 23: Public reading of Edwin Markham’s Poetry, 11:30 – 1:00 p.m., west side of Tower Hall.

April 24: Poetry reading by Phelan Award winners, plus works of past SJSU poets, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., MLK, Jr. Library, Second Floor.

April 26: Vietnamese American journalist Andrew Lam, presented by the Center for Literary Arts, co-sponsored by the MLK, Jr. Library, 7:30 p.m., MLK, Jr. Library Rms. 225 – 229. Free admission.

May 1: Poetry Lounge @ the Blue Monkey, with SJSU Professor Gabriele Rico, and other readers TBA, followed by open mic, 7:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m., The Blue Monkey, 1 E. San Fernando, Downtown San Jose, co-sponsored with Poetry Center San Jose.

May 2: Poet and performance artist Diem Jones, with eight-piece musical ensemble, (co-sponsored by MACLA and Poetry Center San Jose), 7:30 p.m., May 2, 2007, MLK, Jr. Library (event co-sponsor), Rooms 225-229.   Free admission.

May 4: Department of English & Comparative Literature Phelan and Student Writing Awards Ceremonies, 2:30 p.m., Washington Square Hall Rm. 109.

May 9: Fiction writers ZZ Packer (2008 Lurie Chair), Elmaz Abinader, and Mitch Berman, winners of 2007 Arts Council Silicon Valley Artists’ Fellowships in Fiction reading, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro Street, Mountain View.

May 12: Newly admitted MFA student orientation, 9:30 a.m. – Noon, MLK, Jr. Library, Second Floor.

May 12: MFA May and August 2007 Graduates’ Reading, 2:00 p.m., MLK, Jr. Library, Second Floor, followed by a Champagne Reception.
