|Writing Internship/Independent Study_____________________

ENGLISH 298 (3 units)

English 298, an independent study/writing internship, satisfies 3 units of the 6-unit Professional Training requirement for the MFA in Creative Writing. If you wish to propose a one-semester writing internship project, you must first begin by submitting your proposed project to the MFA adviser.

For the project you propose, you must complete writing, editing, publishing, developing a web site development or completing a volunteer teaching or writing-related research project that has been approved by the MFA adviser.

A project may involve one of the following activities:

  • Serving as an unpaid program assistant to support the activities of the Center for Literary Arts.
  • Serving as an unpaid student teacher working with a creative writing class at San Jose State University.
  • Serving as an unpaid writer/editor for a newsletter(s) associated with the Creative Writing program, English department, or other San Jose State University department or program.
  • Serving as a student creative writing teacher at an area secondary or primary school, such as the CLA-sponsored project at Yerba Buena High School, or the on-going after school creative writing workshop at Saratoga High School.
  • Serving as a writer and/or editor for a local or regional literary magazine, newsletter, or web site.
  • Serving as a volunteer for a non-profit community arts group, arts agency, foundation, or service organization where your principal tasks require you to write. The writing may include but not be limited grant proposal materials, public relations copy, or advertising for print and/or electronic media.
