US Cyber Challenge Cyber Quests Preparatory Day Camp

On both April 5th and 26th, 2014, San José State University (SJSU) hosted the 2014 US Cyber Challenge CyberQuests Preparatory Day Camps.  Results from online CyberQuest competitions were used to select candidates for admittance into the prestigious US Cyber Challenge Western Regional Cyber Security Camp to be held at SJSU in August.

The Director of the Cyber Security + Big Data Initiative, Dr. Sigurd Meldal and Executive Director of the Center for Information Assurance at Cal Poly Pomona, Dr. Daniel Manson were key Camp contributors.  Camp instruction was led by Dr. Thomas Austin (SJSU Information Security Professor), Kyle Osborne (Information Security Engineer of Tesla Motors), Joshua Chin (Executive Director of Net Force), Anthony Langga (President of the SJSU Information Security Club), and Joe Needleman (Cal Poly Pomona).  Sponsors for the Day camp include Deloitte, Facebook, FireEye, IBM, Kaiser Permanente, McAfee, PG&E, RSA, Veracode, and Visa.

Nearly 80 students and professionals participated in each of the two Camp’s activities and discussions.

All are encouraged to attend the next USCC CyberQuests Cyber camp to be held at SJSU in the summer of 2014.

US Cyber Challenge CyberQuests are online competitions that test competitors’ abilities to identify vulnerabilities in a virtual network and answer questions related to their findings.  These day camps were aimed at preparing participants to compete in CyberQuests, potentially enhancing their chances of qualifying for a position in the Summer Boot Camp.
