A Letter from Dance Coordinator Fred Mathews

Fred MathewsThe dance program at San José State University has a long history of excellence, offering solid dance training and a diverse academic education. Committed to a high standard, the program offers the professional Bachelor of Fine Arts and the Bachelor of Arts degrees.

As an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Dance, the program currently hosts eighty-five majors, offering all students many opportunities to develop their potential and explore new ideas, both as performers and choreographers. The entire faculty, along with special guest artists, guide their students with extensive experience in performance and choreography.

Students are guided through all levels of ballet, modern, jazz, and tap. In addition, students may participate in classes in Hip Hop and techniques of World Dance, which has included Capoeira, East Indian, Flamenco, and Polynesian forms.

The program sponsors two performing companies: University Dance Theatre, an ensemble dedicated to more modern and contemporary dance performance; and Company One, which focuses on the art of musical theatre. The dance program also is the resident site of sjDANCEco, an active contemporary performing company.

Whether your career goals include performance, choreographing, or simply expanding your knowledge of one of the most expressive forms of art, we are confident that you will find it here. The policies and procedures for the Dance program are described in the following sections. If you have further questions or would like more information, please contact the School of Music and Dance Recruitment office.
