OUr two companies
The dance program sponsors two performing companies: University Dance Theatre (UDT) and Company One. Directed by Gary Masters, UDT is SJSU's contemporary dance ensemble in the distinctive tradition of American Modern Dance. It is a training ground for the advanced dance major or minor who aspires to a career in the professional arena. UDT has had the honor of performing with the internationally acclaimed Limón Dance Company and as part of San José Dance Theatre's "Meritage" program. The ensemble has performed the works of American masters José Limón, Hanya Holm, and Doris Humphrey and also fosters works of emerging and developing choreographers of the Bay area. In addition to annual performances at the University, the ensemble has toured California and has given informal performances and lecture demonstrations o campus and in the community. UDT participates annually in "Dancin' Downtown -- South Bay Celebrates Dance Week" and represents the University at the American College Dance Festival each year.
Company One is a musical theatre performing ensemble and serves as a training ground for dancers, singers ,and actors who wish to pursue a career in the professional musical theatre world. Under the creative direction of Janie Scott, a seasoned Broadway and tour professional herself, Company One presents original productions. Company members are challenged as triple threat performers working with material drawn from the musical theatre world of Broadway, Off-Broadway, cabaret clubs, and the contemporary works of regional theatre. Company One presents a full production every semester as part of the Dance Program's concert season. In addition, the Company tours throughout the Bay area to colleges, community groups, and high schools, providing ample performance opportunities for all company members.
Both companies hold auditions at the end of the spring semester and are open to any dance major or mine at SJSU. The companies meet five days a week throughout the school year.
