John Beasant III, a native of Denver, Colorado, holds an MFA degree in dance from the University of Utah. This semester marks his first endeavor with the San Jose State University’s dance program, where he teaches intermediate/advanced modern technique.

Last year, John served as a full-time faculty member of theDepartment of Dance at California State University, Long Beach. While there, he taught modern dance technique, dance composition, introduction to modern dance (general ed), improvisation, senior seminar, and lead directed studies and teaching assistantships for graduate students.

John enjoys working as an independent dance artist, teaching and performing (most recently with Keith Johnson/Dancers based in Long Beach, CA). He is a former member of Doug Varone and Dancers (2001-2010), has served as a guest artist with The José Limón Dance Company (2008-2011), and has also made numerous appearances as an actor and singer for the stage, television, and film.

Some other company credits include: Shapiro and Smith Dance, Gallim Dance, ARENA Dances, Company XIV, Brian Brooks Moving Company, the Music Theater of Wichita, the Aquila Theatre Company, and The Metropolitan Opera.

John also relishes presenting his own dances with various companies, universities, and festivals. The University of Utah, the Modern American Dance Company, and the Juilliard School for the Performing Arts have most recently commissioned John’s choreography. Once nominated for Dance Magazine’s “Outstanding Choreographer of the Year” Award for his work that was presented at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington DC, John has also been invited to teach master classes and create a new work for the Escuela de Danza Universidad Nacional, in Costa Rica, in May/June of 2015.
