Schedule of 2006 Summer RUMBA Events

Application and Selection

  • Application deadline: February 14, 2006

  • Interviews: February 21, 2006

  • Selection of RUMBA Participants: March 3, 2006

  • Selected students will form part of RUMBA's 2006 cohort.

 

The summer program has the following components:

  • Ten weeks of mentored research

  • A short intensive molecular biology techniques course

  • Weekly research meetings

  • Culminating Symposium

Mentored Research

  • Begins on June 4, 2006

  • Ends on August 11, 2006

  • Each faculty will mentor one participating student

  • Students will pursue research projects under the guidance of a RUMBA faculty.

An intensive Molecular Biology Techniques Course

  • For the first two weeks participating RUMBA students will be engaged in a two-hr techniques course (9:30am-11:30am).

  • Students will learn to isolate genomic DNA, prepare and run agarose gels, perform subcloning and transformation, and perform PCR

  • Begins on June 4, 2006

  • Ends on June 16, 2006

Culminating Symposium

  • Participating students will write a five page formal paper describing their research findings.

  • Participating students will present their findings in a culminating symposium in the form of poster formal presentations to be given on the last day of the program (August 11, 2006)
