I came to San Jose State University in 1991 after nine years of teaching Junior High and High School science. During that time (1982-1991), I was involved in curriculum development, writing laboratory manuals for Life Science, Biology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology. Two years (1987-1988 & 1989-1990) were served as a Mentor Teacher presenting science inservice professional development to secondary school teachers in addition to his normal high school teaching. I believe that science teaching should be inquiry-based and conceptually oriented. I teach a research course to prospective science teachers that is concentrates upon the integration of "Nature of Science" into the classroom. For the past several years I have been involved in revising the university introductory biology courses for majors to include more conceptually oriented, inquiry-based instruction. I am currently teaching the Zoology 173 course "Mammalogy" which will be taught in Fall 2001. I am one of the Biology 2 (Animal Biology) professors. This course is designed to introduce biology majors to the realm of animal diversity, anatomy and physiology, ecology, and evolution. I also teach General Education biology courses.
Recent Courses Taught:
Fall 2001 Mammalogy (Zoology 173, lecture/laboratory) Nature of Science (Science 255 lecture/seminar) Spring 2000 Animal Biology (Biology 2 lecture, Laboratory coordinator) Secondary School Science (SCED 373 lecture/seminar/lab/activity) Fall 1999 Animal Biology (Biology 2, laboratory) Contemporary Science Education (Science 220 lecture/seminar)
