MAS 010A-B: MEXICAN AMERICANS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF U.S. HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT
The American people and institutions from various ethnic points of view. Historical similarities and differences of various groups that make up the U.S. and its historical/political institutions. Satisfies American Institutions for Core GE Courses
A. From pre-Columbia times to 1865.
B. From 1865 to the present.

MAS 040: THE CHICANO THEATRE
Introduction to the basic art form and functions of Chicano theatre in the U.S. (1965-present). Examines historical, political and socio-psychological factors associated with the birth and development of “El Teatro” form and includes writing, production and performance of plays.
Prerequisites: Engl 1A or instructor consent.
Repeatable for credit.
Lecture 1 hour/activity 2 hours.

Techniques of effective oral communication. Principals of rhetoric through analysis and critique of contemporary issues concerning Mexican Americans. Satisfies A1 Oral Communication for Core GE Courses.

MAS 105: CHICANOS: UNITED STATES/ MEXICO RELATIONS
Exploration of U.S./ Mexico relations through the Chicana/o perspective. Emphasis is on both historical and contemporary issues.

MAS 115: POLITICS OF THE CHICANA/O COMMUNITY
Analysis of the American political system and institutions from a Chicana/o perspective.

MAS 120: ECONOMICS AND THE CHICANA/O COMMUNITY
Analysis of the American economic system from a Chicana/o perspective. Focus is on the changing roles of Chicanas/os in the U.S. and global economies.

MAS 125: CHICANA/O COMMUNITY STUDIES
Examination of Chicana/o community activities, including organizations and contemporary issues.

MAS 127: CHICANAS/OS AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
Crime, delinquency, and the interaction between Chicano/Latino communities and the criminal justice system. The roles of government agencies, local law enforcement, the courts and corrections.
Prerequisites: Upper division standing or instructor consent.

MAS 130: CHICANAS AND CHICANOS IN AMERICAN SOCIETY
An analysis of males and females as both individuals and family members in the context of American society.
Prerequisites: Completion of core GE, satisfaction of Writing Skills Test and upper division standing. Satisfies area S for Advanced GE Courses.

MAS 135: CONTEMPORARY CHICANA/O ISSUES
Analysis of selected issues/topics involving Chicano/Latino communities.
Prerequisites: English 1A or instructor consent.

An examination of selected Chicana/o literature including poetry, short stories, essays, and novels.

MAS 150: RESEARCH METHODS
A survey of research methods used in Chicana/o studies that address issues in Chicano communities.
Prerequisites: Engl 1A and MAS 130
Offered only occasionally.

MAS 160: GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN CHICANA/O COMMUNTIY
An examination of how patriarchy, race, and class shape Chicanas in their everyday lives in American society. It explores how women resist and challenge the limitations placed on them as a result of being women and members of a racial/ethnic group.
Prerequisites: Completion of core GE, satisfaction of Writing Skills Test and upper division standing. Satisfies Area S for Advanced GE Courses.

MAS 170: HOLLYWOOD’S IMAGE OF CHICANO/CHICANAS
Analysis of Hollywood’s contribution, through cinema (1900s-1980s), to shaping the sociopolitical relations between Chicano/Chicanas and the dominant society, plus the use of traditional ideological concepts in promoting stereotyped images of Chicanos/Chicanas.
Prerequisites: Engl 1A and Engl 1B or instructor consent.

MAS 175: COMPARATIVE LATINO CULTURES IN THE AMERICAS
A comparison of people and cultures in the evolution of the Chicano/Latino identity. Diverse perspective will be presented through film and other materials.
Prerequisites: Completion of core GE, satisfaction of Writing Skills Test and upper division standing. Satisfies area V for Advanced GE Courses.

Seminar exploring the historical experiences of Chicanas/os, from the indigenous past to the present. This course integrates historiography, as it is grounded in an analysis of the development of and changes in the field of Chicana/o history.

MAS 210: FOUNDATIONS OF CHICANA/O STUDIES
An analysis of the evolution of Chicana/o thought and intellectual production and the development of the field of Chicana/o Studies. This course analyzes the basic constructs and theories underlying Chicana/o Studies, from early works to present.

MAS 215: CHICANAS/OS AND EDUCATION
This course focuses on key educational issues facing Chicanas/os both historically and currently, including policy, curriculum, cultural conflict, and the different efforts to address them.

Seminar analyzing the impact of social, political, economic, and cultural systems on Chicana/o communities.

MAS 252: COMPLEX ORGANIZATION IN A DIVERSE SOCIETY
An analysis of complex organizational structures and policy formation in diverse contexts. The course emphasizes the dynamics of work in organizations that involve different racial groups and considers how to apply theoretical approaches to policy work.

MAS 275: RESEARCH METHODS
Seminar exploring the methodological challenges posed by Chicana/o Studies. The course helps students develop skills in specific research methods of their choice as well as research proposals for the project/thesis, or other areas of post-graduate work.
