Admission
Requirements
There are both university
and department requirements for admission to the program.
University requirements for admission to its Graduate
Division are available at the Graduate Studies and Research
Office: http://www.sjsu.edu/gradstudies. They include
(1) a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
and (2) a minimum GPA of 2.5 for the past 60 semester
units.
Minimum department requirements
for admission to the program are a BA/BS degree in anthropology,
a 3.0 grade point average (B or better) in the last 60
semester units of undergraduate work, and a 3.5 grade
point average in anthropology.
Students without an undergraduate
degree in anthropology may complete an 18 semester unit
preparatory track consisting of ANTH 11 Cultural Anthropology;
ANTH 12 Human Evolution or ANTH 13 Archaeology; an upper
division anthropology research methods course (ANTH 149
or 155 or 168) or equivalent experience; ANTH 131 Theories
of Culture; and 6 units of upper division anthropology
electives (3.5 GPA required).
Applying for
Admission
The program presently
accepts students for the Fall semester. All materials
must be submitted by May 30. Prospective students must
apply separately to the university and the Anthropology
Department.
The application to the
university is submitted electronically through CSUMentor,
which has a link on the Graduate Studies and Research
website and the Anthropology Department website.

The following materials should be submitted:
• a current
curriculum vita or resume
• unofficial (photocopied) copies of university
transcripts
• two letters of reference
• a letter of intent that addresses (1)
how your background
prepares you for our program and (2) how
our program fits
into your career plans
• a sample of your writing (8 page minimum)
Students are admitted to the program
under classified or conditional status. Students admitted
conditionally must fulfill specific conditions before
being classified.
