Our History For the developing glass artist, San Jose State University offers a diverse program which aspires to high levels of productivity and creativity through it's BA, BFA, and MFA degrees. Located in the Santa Clara Valley (aka Silicon Valley) in Northern California SJSU's glass tradition has continued from its founding by Dr. Robert Fritz, one of the pioneers of the American studio glass movement, in 1964. SJSU had one of the nation's first glass programs and has continued to be a leader in preparing artists for careers in glass. A specialization in the Studio Arts Program, art glass is a highly complex artistic material offering limitless potential for artistic expression. The basic goal of the glass area is to assist students in finding their personal forms of visual expression, to blend technical expertise with aesthetic vision, and assist the student in developing a professional example by including several workshops each semester by such well-known artists as Sonja Blomdahl and Marvin Lipofsky, and by individual instruction provided by Mary B. White, program head, and by an extensive Artist in Residence Program. Guest artists, which have included Lino Tagliapietra in October 1997 and Dale Chihuly in 1995, further enrich the student's exposure to the contemporary glass movement. The large community of glass artists and SJSU glass area alumni living in the San Francisco Bay Area allows for frequent lectures and demonstrations by artists such as Zoe Adorno, Steve Lundberg and David Hopper. An extensive custom glass facility boasts complete hot, warm, and cold glass working areas with a full compliment of equipment. Supported by SJSU's large and active metal foundry, wood and metal shops, and ceramic labs, the student can expect thorough technical support in all multi-media exploration. Intermedia and interdisciplinary exchange is encouraged. |
