Available Scholarships

Through the generous contributions of supporters, foundations and alumni the Department of Economics is able to offer the following scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students. The application period for all scholarships begins on the first Monday in October and ends at 5:00 p.m. on the last Friday in October. Decisions are made in early November. Application forms are available online or at the Economics Department office.

In all cases, students must be officially declared economics majors and in good standing.  Graduate students must have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. Undergraduate students must have a 2.7 grade point average in the major and overall.  Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 2 economics courses at SJSU and be currently enrolled for at least 1 economics course.  Graduate applicants must be currently enrolled for at least 3 economics courses and have a strong recommendation from faculty.

Joe Fuhrig Memorial Scholarship - Number varies, $500 per award

Joe Fuhrig was a passionate economist, gifted educator, and great golfer. He received his degree at Cal State Hayward, and before receiving his full-time position at Golden Gate University, Joe taught as an adjunct lecturer at nearly every college throughout the Bay area, as well as in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Monterey, and Wichita. He took his enthusiasm for economics on the road, touring in 17 cities in what he called his "Traveling Capitalism Show." In 2002-2003, San Jose State University students had the good fortune to experience this gifted, teacher-scholar. In life, Joe’s goal was to expound economic principles to more classes than any other economist. He achieved that goal. In death, his fervor to spread for economics through this scholarship established in his memory.

Graduate Fellowships in Austrian Economics

San Jose State has two graduate fellowship for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in Austrian Economics. The Doug French Fellowship provides a cash fellowship covering the full expense of out of state tuition at SJSU. The Murray Rothbard Fellowship provides a $5,000 cash fellowship to an MA student at SJSU.

Alumni Scholarship - Two Awards, $500 each

A generous and highly successful alumnus, who wishes to remain anonymous, established this scholarship with the instruction that scholarships be directed to students who the department believes show academic promise and drive. The alumnus is remembered by faculty for his own determination to succeed against the odds and against predictions.

Koch Foundation Scholarship - Seven Awards for Graduate Students, $800 each

The Koch Charitable Foundation was established in 1980 by Charles G. Koch. The Foundation seeks to advance social progress and well-being through the study, application and dissemination of the principles that enable a market economy to prosper.

Estevan Alva Family Scholarship - Two Awards, $500 each

This private scholarship fund was established by the Alva family to help increase the number of undergraduate Hispanic students majoring in economics. You are eligible to apply for the scholarship if you meet the requirements listed above for all undergraduate students and you are of Hispanic descent. Be sure to indicate that you are applying for the Alva Family Scholarship on the Scholarship Application Form.

College of Social Science Scholarships

Outstanding achievement by students majoring in one of the Social Sciences is recognized by the award of College Scholarships at a Spring Honors Ceremony. The scholarships represent the generosity of many friends and alumni. They honor former deans and students in the College of Social Sciences. These scholarships are designed to reward academic excellence, as well as to help finance the ever-increasing costs of higher education. Selection reflects impressive accomplishments of a college career.
