MINUTES

Meeting called to order at 1530. Present: D. Jaehne (Chair), G. Selter, M. McNeil, L. Rowntree

1. Approve Minutes of 10/21 meeting.

2. Announcements. M. McNeil announced the summer conference ERGOCON, which IREES will team with. Expected attendance will be 400 or so, plus 50 from IREES. The Forum may wish to become involved.

D. Jaehne passed out Call for Papers for IAPRI Symposium on behalf of J. Marcondes, who could not attend.

2. EH&S. L. Rowntree reported on the latest meeting of the C&A committee where he made a presentation about the program. Final approval is pending meeting on Monday, 11/22.

3. Taiwan Earthquake Safety. There will be a program, featuring Brian Sherin, sponsored by the Center for Disaster Mitigation. The program will be held in Engineering Auditorium on Dec. 15 from 1400-1600. The Forum has asked to be a co-sponsor and has agreed to help circulate flyers for the event and to help staff the registration tables. D. Jaehne will solicit volunteers for the registration. L. Rowntree will get the flyer for distribtution.

4. Spring Speaker Series. The Forum continued to discuss potential speakers and approaches for the Spring Speaker program. The focus remains on water issues. Members suggested names of several contact persons for identifying potential speakers. The Santa Clara Valley Water District emerged as a desirable participant, or source of expertise. Individual Forum members will continue to develop their ideas for the program and speakers. There was some talk about partnering with the IREES industry mixer in the spring which, this year, will be an MTBE workshop. The appropriateness to water issues seems clear.

5. Forum Promotion. The Forum decided that it was too late in the semester to mount a speaker appearance in the Science 2 course. We'll develop this project for next fall. Neither the Outreach Committee nor the Outreach Materials committee was able to meet during the previous month. D. Jaehne reported making contact with the Student Life office to talk about adding an course faire to the Welcome Day program in Fall. Talks will continue.

6. Student Activities. D. Jaehne and M. McNeil reported on their discussion at the IREES Executive Committee and the possible project of recognizing environmental research work of engineering students on their Senior Project Day. There was some discussion about the merits or drawbacks of such a college-specific involvement. The group decided to continue to develop the idea. There was also talk of the Forum sponsoring and producing a poster session for environmental research work from all colleges.

7. Forum Website Development. D. Schwarz left word with the Forum that he will add a calendar to the Forum's website.

8. Next Meeting? The Forum decided that it was late in the semester and faculty energies are dissipating. The group agreed that Jaehne would poll members after Thanksgiving to determine whether we should hold a December meeting.

9. Adjourned at 1630.

Minutes respectfully submitted by D. Jaehne
