Description: Geography 172 covers the processes involved in creating a map. All aspects of the mapping process will be addressed, but specific emphasis will be placed on compilation, generalization, and design. You will be introduced to the map production process, including graphic arts reproduction technology.

The course involves a combination of lectures, discussions, and laboratory exercises. You should read the assigned sections of the textbook prior to the week in which they are discussed. The lectures/discussions will expand on the materials in the text.Discussions will involve all members of the class. However, you will not be evaluated on participation.

Laboratory exercises will cover a range of map production, including both manual and automated techniques. Most exercises will involve the use of computer-based graphics applications. No prior computer experience is required.
