SJSU Geography Geography 175
Geographic Information Systems: Project Development

Instructor: Richard Taketa
Meeting Times: See Geog 175 General Page

Description: The principal objective of this course is for you to be able to design and construct a geographic information system to solve problems in environmental management, business, or earth science research. You will gain an understanding the technical elements of a GIS project and become familiar with GIS application issues. We will also be addressing the construction of the databases and applications software required to solve a variety of application problems.

The course will involve a combination of lectures, discussions, and laboratory exercises. You should read the assigned readings prior to the week in which they are discussed. The lectures/discussions will expand on the materials in the text. Discussions will involve all members of the class. However, you will not be evaluated on participation in general discussions.

Seven laboratory exercises will develop your knowledge of ArcView and Arc/Info, and prepare you for your final project. Some of the Arc/Info exercises will be based on ESRI's Understanding GIS: The Arc/Info Method

You will complete a GIS project involving constructing or prototyping a geographic information system.
