Geography 286
GIS Project Management

Instructor: Richard Taketa
Meeting Times: See Geog 286 General Page

Description: Geography 286 focuses on developing GIS project skills. You will gain experience in the definition, planning, execution, and completion of a geographic information science project for one of several clients. You will exercise your technical skills, develop the ability to work in a team environment, and develop negotiating and project management skills. You will also be providing a service to the community by helping others develop and expand their geographic information systems.

You should have taken at least one of the geographic techniques courses (Cartography, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems). You will need the instructor’s permission if you have not taken one of these courses.

The class will be run as a seminar/project. You and your fellow students will be part of one or more project teams. You will work out among yourselves how to organize yourselves. You will negotiate your assigned project with your client organization. The instructor will provide consultation on how to approach these various issues, but the final decisions will be yours.

You and the other class members will operate as part of a GIS projects department. As such, you will be reporting to a department manager (the instructor). You will have a great deal of latitude to organize your specific project. However, your actions will be subject to review by the department manager.
