Announcement

The History Department has won a million-dollar grant from the United States Department of Education to train working teachers in the subject of American history.

Our partners in the grant, "Inventing America: Creating the Teacher/Scholar Community in the Santa Clara Valley," are the Santa Clara County Office of Education and the Silicon Valley History Online Project, a consortium of seven local archives including Special Collections in the King Library.

"Inventing America" will extend into the academic years 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.  The department will provide half the units of a masters degree in history to 35 teachers, professional development seminars for another 100 teachers, five American history guest lecturers at SJSU, book talks, support for local History Day activities and an American history symposium at SJSU in the summer of 2008.

Though many of these activities are reserved for teachers in the field, teachers in training in the department are welcome to attend many of these events, all of which are paid for by the grant.

Dr. Patricia Lopes Don, Academic Advisor for "Inventing America," will keep all of our students informed of these events through our regular email list and occasional flyers.
