EDIT 186 Course Syllabus

Catalog Description

EDIT 186 is a survey course in the selection, utilization, and evaluation of instructional media primarily in adult learning configurations. Analysis of communication and learning theories. Design and production of teaching and learning materials. (Prerequisite: Upper division standing. 3 units).


Course Purposes or Goals

EDIT 186 provides students with a basic introduction to instructional technology and its applications in educational settings, including business and industry. Students will be provided with the opportunity to examine theories and practices in the field. During the semester, students will have the opportunity to develop familiarity with various types of instructional materials. The major goal of the course is for students, working individually and/or in teams, to design educational media materials.


Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe several instructional systems design models and identify their theoretical underpinnings.
  • Conduct a needs assessment in order to determine an educational need.
  • Construct a PERT chart to guide the development of an educational project.
  • Analyze an instructional environment and write a prescriptive program based on the identified needs of the learner.
  • Develop educational media which incorporates a consideration of research-based instructional strategies - the model should include a knowledge of goals, objectives, prerequisite skills, enabling objectives, prerequisite assessment, time charts, instructional materials, and formative and summative evaluations.
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with multiple modes of instructional media, including: info-brochures, audio tapes, internet video, transparencies, computer software, fotonovelas, anchored instruction or simulations, educational games, pamphlets, self-paced instructional modules, CD, DVD, flip charts, slides, and multimedia.
  • Field test educational media which incorporates various forms of instructional strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of those materials.

Professional Standards

It is assumed that all students are practitioners in the field of educational technology. As such, the highest of standards are expected in professional conduct and in workmanship. Assignments are to be turned in on their due dates, late assignments will be accepted only with a valid medical excuse. All work is to be word processed -handwritten work is unacceptable. It is anticipated that students will maintain the highest of professional standards in their class participation.

Midterm Examination (100 points) A cognitive assessment instrument measuring students knowledge of the content of the modules and the textbook will be administered on the 8th module. When you are ready to take the midterm examination send the following email steve_tatum@comcast.net note to the instructor:
I am ready to take my midterm examination, please email me the test.

Upon completion of the examination EMAIL your answers to Prof. Tatum.
Do not send as a word processed document. Please cut and paste your exam into the email.


Final Examination (100 points) - A cognitive assessment instrument measuring students' knowledge of the content covered in lecture and in the textbook may be administered as part of the 16th module. Students are responsible for having independently read and understood the content of the textbook and the module activities. When you are ready to take the final examination send the following email steve_tatum@comcast.net note to the instructor:
I am ready to take my final examination, please email me the test.

Portfolio (100 points) - Students are to develop a portfolio of reflective learning materials during the course. The following items are to be included in each portfolio (click here to see a portfolio from an IT student - supplied by Tom Lahman):

Upon completion of all 16 modules, the midterm examination, and the final examination students are to provide their completed portfolio to the instructor for evaluation. Portfolios should be mastered as a PDF file and emailed to the instructor at steve_tatum@comcast.net. If you choose to create a printed version then you can turned in your portfolio several ways:

•Handing in the materials face-to face in SH 404.
•Dropped off in instructor's box at IT lab (SH 404)
•Via Postal Service

If you turn in a printed copy, please include a return address with postage with your portfolio if you want it mailed back to you upon completion of the evaluation process. If other arrangements need to be made, please contact the instructor.


Grades
  • A - 90 to 100% of the total possible points
  • B - 80 to 89% of the total possible points
  • C - 70 to 79 % of the total possible points
  • D - 60 to 69% of the total possible points
  • F - 0 to 59% of the total possible points
