Early Years

The Instructional Technology Department at San José State University began in 1956 as a group of faculty from the College of Education met to form courses to address the integration of technology in teaching and learning. While the early "pioneers" were primarily assigned duties in single and multiple subjects teacher preparation programs, other from around the campus jointed them in forming a new interest group based in the audio-visual tradition.

Founding a Department

The Instructional Technology Department was not formed in a single year, rather, the founding faculty developed courses over a four or five year period. Eventually the faculty left their "home" departments and formed a new department. Early courses in the department included offering such as "Chalkboard for Teachers", "Instructional Cartooning", and "Audio-visual Equipment Usage". By the early 1960s the audio-visual roots of the department were set and the department was offering it's own courses and degrees.
