Earn College Credit for "Mission: Critical"

and Satisfy the G.E. Requirement in Critical Thinking

. . . without Coming to Class!

"Mission: Critical" is now being offered as an online course at San Jose State University (English 7: Critical Thinking). Upon completion of each division of the tutorial, students will be given reading and activity assignments, some of which will require small-group e-mail exchanges with other students. In addition, students will write two formal essays and sit for four tests, including a comprehensive final examination. Those tests will be the only in-person elements of the course: students in the San Jose area will be able to schedule exams at their convenience with SJSU's Testing Center; for students outside San Jose, arrangements will be made with a suitable facility in their area.

As a web-only course for college credit, "Mission: Critical" is not for everyone. Only those who are comfortable undertaking largely independent study, who are self-motivated, and who are reasonably familiar with computers and the Internet should consider registering. Before enrolling in the web-only section of English 7: Critical Thinking, potential students should spend at least an hour with "Mission: Critical" online. Potential students should also realize that technical problems with a student's computer or internet service provider which may arise during the course are entirely that student's problem, and no technical assistance will be provided by "Mission: Critical" or San Jose State University.

For those still interested in taking "Mission: Critical" for credit, we welcome you to the brave new world of online instruction. Please read the applicable section below for information on how to enroll.

San Jose State University students can enroll in the online class by reviewing the course greensheet, and then e-mailing the instructor for the enrollment code. The code has been suppressed in the time schedule to ensure that students enrolling are aware of the nature of the course, and fully prepared to undertake online study. The course usually begins during the first full week of classes.

If you are a student at any campus of the California State University, you can enroll directly in the web section of English 7: Critical Thinking by completing a Visitor Program form, available at all admissions and records offices. The Visitor Program allows any CSU student (for example, from CSU Northridge) to enroll in courses from any other campus (in this case, San Jose State), and it provides for concurrent enrollment on both campuses. Once you have completed the Visitor Program form, you will be able to enroll in the online course at SJSU while taking other classes at the same time at your home university. When you have submitted that form and you are ready to enroll in the web section of English 7: Critical Thinking, send an e-mail message to mesher@email.sjsu.edu with your name, e-mail address, student number, and home campus. You will be billed by your home university for the total number of units you take at both, just as if you took all those units locally. Before registering, be sure to check with your G.E. advisor that English 7: Critical Thinking, from SJSU, will satisfy your G.E. requirement in critical thinking.
