relationship with Institute d’Etudes Politiques de Lille. This program is ideal for
students studying Politics, International Relations, or European Studies.

CITY FACTS

Grenoble, France
The city of Grenoble is located in the French Alps, famous for its scenic beauty and outdoor activities. Home to the Winter Olympics of 1968, the areas surrounding the city boasts some of the premier ski resorts in the world. Also known for its hiking trails, gorges, caves, and breathtaking panoramic views, Grenoble offers something for everyone in all seasons. With its university that dates back to the 14th century, renowned art museum, historical churches, and memorials to regional history and the French resistance, Grenoble is a wonderful place to explore French culture and European history.

CAMPUS FACTS

European Summer University
The European Summer University is an intensive, transnational summer program for students who are only able to spend a short term abroad. Its Summer 2006 term will be held at the University of Grenoble, but ESU is actually a consortium of European universities from all over Europe. Therefore, students and faculty come from many different countries including the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Finland, Cyprus, Belgium, and The Netherlands. The European Summer University offers a truly global experience.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must:
- be enrolled as an SJSU student for one semester prior to departure, or be a California
community college student eligible to enter SJSU by the semester of departure
- have completed the majority of lower division coursework in their field
- have upper division standing by the semester of departure
- have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.

There is no language prerequisite, but students are strongly encouraged to take beginning
French prior to participation in the program.

Academic Program

ESU is a three week intensive summer program of small group teaching with an international staff and visiting practitioners. Each week long module consists of 20 classroom hours with significant informal interaction with staff outside of the classroom. In the final week students prepare an oral presentation as well as present written work at the end of the program. They receive individual guidance on their work. The teaching staff are drawn from the participating universities and beyond. They include established scholars with international reputations and young scholars who are making their mark.

Courses vary each summer depending on the specific lecturers, but some course offered in the past have included:

• Comparative Institutions in Europe
• Legitimacy Issues in the EU
• Intercultural Challenges in Europe
• The United States and World Order
• Regionalism and International Relations
• Foreign Policy Analysis
• The State, Nationalism, and Identity
• Conflict in World Society
• Elections and Electoral Systems
• Political Elites
• Political Communication
• Political Parties

Accommodations

Students can choose to live at reasonably priced campus housing, which includes new or refurbished residence halls. Bed linen and a refrigerator are included in each room.

These are estimated costs for the whole semester. Personal expenses may vary among different students and those who will be doing a lot of traveling during the school break and after the program should estimate higher.
