City FACTS

Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto was Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. It is now the country's seventh largest city with a population of 1.4 million people and a modern face. During the World War II, Kyoto was not chosen as a target of air raids due to its historic value. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.

Eligibility Requirements

The Program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students from SJSU and other CSU campuses, as well as any other matriculated college students.  All majors and minors are welcome to apply.  No Japanese language proficiency is required but those with no Japanese language skills must take a two-day survival Japanese course to be taught by Dr. Kodama prior to the departure.

Academic Program

  • This program is offered by the Department of Foreign Languages and all participants will be enrolled in the three unit course (JPN 160 — SPECIAL TOPICS IN JAPANESE STUDIES).
  • Students who do not major or minor in Japanese (no Japanese language skills required) are welcome to participate in the program, but they are required to take the survival Japanese course.
  • This program will partially fulfill requirements for a Japanese major or minor, as well as an International Business major with a minor in Japanese.

Accommodation, Safety and Visas

  • Students will stay with a Japanese host family in Kyoto.  Breakfast and dinner will be provided.
  • Japan is a very safe country.  Especially, Kyoto where you will stay most of the time was ancient capital; it is safer and more hospitable than any other major cities in Japan.
  • There are contingency plans to deal with sick/injured faculty and students (i.e. medical insurance and medical evacuation as a part of SJSU study abroad medical coverage through CSU; estimated cost: $50.00 per person included in the fee).
  • No visas are required for the short stay in Japan.

Dr.Y. Kodama (CL410L, Phone: 408-924-4063, Email: Yasue.Yanai@sjsu.edu), who is an SJSU Assistant Professor and Advisor of the Japanese Program will lead the program.  She is very familiar with Japanese culture, history, and society.  Homestay will be arranged by Mr. Kaz Aoki, President of Canvas Gate, Inc. in Santa Clara, who has extensive knowledge of the region of Kyoto.
