A special SJSU program in Portugal - Scholarships available! Program Dates June 20-August 13, 2012
Students will be housed by the University of the Azores, in the island of Sao Miguel, the University of Porto, in the city of Porto and by the University of Lusofona in Lisbon. No better place could be selected for a seven-week study program. Ponta DelgadaPonta Delgada is the largest city in the Azores islands and the capital of Sao Miguel since 1522. Ponta Delgada stretches along the south coast of the island. The flat town is covered in beautiful churches, convents and houses, reflecting the town’s wealthy past as a crucial port between Europe and the New World during the 15th and 16th centuries. PortoNo better place could be selected for a three-week study program. One Planet travel describes Porto as,“…famous for its historical villages, which have been witnessed over 900 years of the country’s history, and for its Port Wine, aged in wine cellars across the Douro River. Porto is also well known for its characterized people, culture and local cuisine. Nowadays, the city can be defined as a modern cosmopolitan area, with several theaters, museums, concert halls, art galleries, libraries, cinemas, and bookshops to offer its visitors. Its historical center has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. While visiting the city, you cannot miss the Porto Cathedral, the Soares dos Reis National Museum (Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis), and the Casa da Música, its concert hall space built in 2005. Porto is known as the city of work. Its people have always defended the nation and have contributed to the discoveries and the economic development of the area. Although its inhabitants are hard-workers, they have a hospitable and honest spirit.” LisbonLisbon, the capital of Portugal, is located on the riverbank of the Tagus River and has a beautiful landscape made up of mountains, beaches, plains, coves, and bays. The city that according to legend dates back to the time of the Phoenicians, is jam packed with historical monuments and archeological sites, as well as traditional neighborhoods were you can here Portugal’s national musical expression, the fado, pour out of small restaurants and taverns where it is performed by artists and common people alike. Lisbon’s night life is legendary with ample offer for every taste and age group. Enjoy the variety of architecture while visiting a wide selection of museums such as the Ancient Art Museum and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, considered the best in Portugal. Besides the city itself, there are many attractions at very close proximity, such as the enchanting village of Sintra and the coast towns of Estoril and Cascais. University of AzoresUniversidade dos Acores is the only public university in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and was founded in 1976. The university places emphasis on Ministry of Science, Technology & Education and wishes to promote the sustainable development of the archipelago of Azores. Lusofona University-PortoLocated in the Historical Center of the city, the Lusofona University - Porto is in accordance to its bylaws: "An institution dedicated to the criation, transmission, criticism and distribution of Culture, art, cience and technology as focused in their educational programs. Its objectives are teaching and research within a service oriented interdisciplinary framework in all Portuguese Speaking coutries, with a particular emphasis in the Northern Iberean Peninsula." Lusofona University-LisbonUniversidade Lusofona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies). This is the largest Portuguese private university and part of Grupo Lusofona which manages universities in Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique. Course Enrollment: Students will participate in an intensive 3-unit course held at SJSU for one week and at the University of Porto for two weeks. Students will return with much knowledge from a very intensive (30-40 hours a week) and structured learning environment. Students will benefit from high tech presentations (PowerPoint), a language lab, use of computers, video etc. to enhance their learning experience. They will have weekly quizzes (20%), and a final exam (25%), assignments (10%), participation (10%), a journal with observations on site visits (10%) and a final Project (25%) on a cultural topic. On weekends students will visit sites of cultural and historical importance. The emphasis is on strengthening the language and knowledge of the various aspects of the culture, which fits in very well with the goal of the SJSU course Portuguese 102A Portuguese Culture and with the Portuguese 20A/B Intermediate Portuguese Courses in the Portuguese Studies program. Hopefully, students will return with not only cherished memories of their stay in Porto but also with very unique experiences. Accommodation, Safety and Visas Porto is a relatively safe city. One Plane travel says,” Security conditions in Portugal are very much like Spain’s. However, it is advisable to be careful in tourist zones because of the robberies that may occur, as in any crowded place.” As far as Visas are concerned, for stays up to 90 days, no visa and no special inoculations are required for USA travelers.
