International Exchange Students
(J-1 Visa)

San José State University (SJSU) has exchange agreements with various partner institutions around the world, which include student exchange programs. Most exchanges are on a reciprocal (one-for-one) basis and exchange students pay tuition at their home institution for their program at SJSU. International students who come to SJSU through an exchange or sponsored program are eligible for a J-1 visa, which is a visa category that provides students with exchange visitor privileges. Exchange students also have certain responsibilities and an obligation to contribute to the internationalization of the SJSU community and its curriculum. This is usually accomplished through active participation in the Global Student Network (GSN).

J-1 visa exchange students enjoy all the rights and privileges of fee-paying matriculated students at San José State University during their stay (usually one or two semesters), but they have not been accepted into a degree program at SJSU. They are at SJSU as special guests, and all academic credit is presumed to transfer back to their home institution to count towards their home institution degree. Exchange students are not eligible to receive a degree from SJSU while on the exchange program.

Please note: In order to apply for the exchange program, SJSU must have a formal exchange agreement with the student's home institution or sponsoring agency. SJSU will not accept an application directly from a student so students should apply through their home institution Exchange Coordinator. Please check below to see below if your university is listed as an exchange partner.
