A Brief History of the University Club

The building in which the University Club now exists was originally two buildings. A family by the name of Sullivan lived in the building behind the Club on San Salvador while their new home was being built on the site of the north side of what is now the University Club in 1914 and 1915. The south side of the Club was originally an apartment house built in the 1920’s. The two buildings were joined in the 1950’s and housed a sorority until the Club bought the building in 1968.

Founded by a group of faculty who wanted a place where they could socialize, the Club’s first President was Leo Gainor of the School of Education. A plaque which lists all the past presidents of the Club hangs in the main dining room.

Over the years the Club has hosted faculty book talks, bridge clubs, bowling, and golf tournaments. The Club has also been the site for many weddings, various receptions and award dinners. Membership levels have been as high as 300.

The Club has 16 rooms that are rented to faculty, staff and graduate students of the University. Over the years, the tenants have included visiting scholars from China and the Republic of Georgia in the former Soviet Union, members of the Jose’ Limon Dance Company, Buddhist nuns from England and many other diverse and delightful individuals. Though the rooms are not elaborate (some consider them “Spartanly furnished”), we offer a quiet get-away close to campus for those who need a place to stay for a few nights a week, or for the entire semester. We are very popular and almost always have a waiting list of prospective tenants. Nina is going on her ninth year as Resident Manager of the Club, a job she really enjoys and which has brought her great joy and many new friendships over the years.
