Ron Boeder has over 24 years experience in product development. He is the Founder and Director of exodesign, a product development and design strategy firm offering services to corporations and engineering firms. About 90% of the products developed by exodesign are in the high-tech arena, and about 50% of its clientele is in the medical industry.
Upon graduation from SJSU his senior project, a medical recordkeeping interface slate, received the Industrial Design Excellence GOLD Award (IDEA). During his early career he held Senior Design positions with Ampex Corporation and Tandem Computers. He was also a Partner in NOW Design, serving the Taiwan computer industry in the 1990’s. He holds several patents, has been widely published, and has been an invited speaker at design and manufacturing conferences in the US and Asia.
Ron has received numerous international design awards, including five Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). His crowning achievement in design strategy is the Tandem Hardware Image Strategy that received the Industrial Design Excellence GOLD Award in 1987.
In addition to running a design firm and teaching, Ron stays very active in the product development world. He is a long-standing member of IDSA and in 2000 he established a company that designs, manufactures, and markets designer products. Most recently he developed a design philosophy coined “Form Follows Production”. The philosophy addresses the critical integration of materials and manufacturing processes in industrial design. A website, blog, and book are in the works to expand the dialogue around this philosophy.
Ron developed and teaches the Materials and Manufacturing courses (DSID 41 and DSID 143) at SJSU and also has taught Foundation courses and mid-level ID studio courses including Intermediate Industrial Design and the Entrepreneurship, IP and Professional Practice courses.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design (BSID), San Jose State University 1987.
