Professor Virginia San Fratello and her partner Ronald Rael, of Rael San Fratello, have been awarded the 2014 Emerging Voices award by The Architecture League of New York.
Each year the League selects eight emerging practitioners through a juried, invited
portfolio competition. The Emerging Voices award spotlights individuals and firms
based in the United States, Canada, or Mexico with distinct design voices and the
potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism. Being
named an Emerging Voice by The Architectural League is one of the most coveted awards
in North American architecture, and the program is notable for its thirty-year history of
identifying and nurturing firms that go on to have influential practices.

SJSU Interior Design Students Win First Place in the NEXT NEST Design Competition
Evangeline Diao and Jennifer del Rosario, Interior Design students at SJSU, are the First Place Winners in the Design Lab Santa Fe Next Nest Student Design Competition sponsored by SITE Santa Fe and the American Association of Interior Designers (ASID). The Student's design called "The Lettuce Wrap" is for a curtain that is based on the geometries and layers found in plants such as lettuce. Their design is 3D printed and engineered to mask the hot summer sun but permit the low summer sun to enter the interior of a building. The juror's for the award were Susan Szenacy from Metropolis Magazine, Matilda McQuaid, Deputy Curatorial Director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and Jason Pilarski, Professor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Congratulations to Evangeline and Jenn!

IIDA Northern California Awards
SJSU Interior Design Students win awards at the 9th annual IIDA Northern California Awards Ceremony held at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA.
2013 EPA Awards
SJSU Interior Design students win over $100,000 in research funds from the EPA. San José State University Interior Design students are applying 3D printer technology to make sustainable building materials. Using saw dust instead of plastic, the team is making inexpensive window coverings and screens that can be tailored easily to local climates.

P3: People Prosperity and the Planet Design Expo
SJSU Interior Design Students to participate in the P3: People Prosperity and the Planet Design Expo to be held on the National Mall in Washington DC on April 25-27. The students are researching sustainable, inexpensive, recyclable building components for use on facades and as interior elements in windows using design methods appropriate for 3D printing technology.
