Scholarships

Through the generous contributions of supporters, foundations and alumni the Department of Economics is able to offer the following scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students. In all cases, students must be officially declared economics majors and in good standing.

Annual Best Paper and Biannual Best Proposal Competitions

The Department of Economics currently runs a number of research competitions for students.  Awards are made in two ways.  A student can submit either 1.) an example of a piece of research they completed,  or 2.) a research proposal they developed.  Both papers and proposals must be developed under the guidance of an SJSU Economics faculty member.

Thus, awards are made through two competitions, a Paper Competition and a Proposal Competition.  Click the links that follow to download the Paper Competition Applications Form and the Proposal Competition Application Form.

For the Paper Competition, on May 15th of each year we make six paper awards; in Spring 2013, there will be two $2,000 awards, two $1,000 awards, and two $500 awards.  Ideally, at each level, one award will go to a graduate student and one to an undergraduate student, but this is contingent upon our receiving enough qualified papers from each group of students.  To apply, email your completed research paper in PDF format, along with the Paper Competition Application Form (available at the link above) to the director of the SFP program, currently Matthew J. Holian (matthew.holian@sjsu.edu).  Please submit your paper ON May 15th.  Note that while you should not submit your paper before the submission date, you are encouraged to contact the SFP director before these dates to receive feedback on your paper.

For the Proposal Competition, applications submit proposals ON October 15th or March 15th, for the Fall or Spring semesters, respectively.  Each semester we will make five awards at $1,000 each; ideally, each semester at least two will go to undergraduate students, though this is contingent upon receiving enough qualified proposals.  Proposals must follow a specific format; the SFP Research Proposal template can be downloaded at the link above.  Note that while you should not submit your proposal before the submission dates, you are encouraged to contact the SFP director before these dates to receive feedback on your proposal.

The table below summarizes the details of the SFP program.
