Computer Labs and Software for Economics Students

Stata labs

The Department of Economics manages Stata (version 12-SE) econometrics / data analysis computer labs in two locations.

Social Sciences computer lab (Dudley Moorhead Hall, room 236)

This lab contains over twenty new computers; six of which run Stata and ArcGIS, and all run SPSS.  This lab is open to students when not reserved for classes; the Economics Department hosts various open lab times; see the Friday Workshop schedule for details. 

The Economics Conference Room (Dudley Moorhead Hall, Room 139)

Open during main office business hours or by appointment.  One computer runs Stata.  Click here to reserve time on the computer in DMH 139.  Note: tutoring conducted in conference room most days (so bring headphones if you plan to crunch numbers on this computer.)

Software licenses available for students

Stata

Students taking Econ 203 or 205A may be eligible for GradPlan pricing through Stata Corp.  Ask you instructor for more information.

SPSS

All current students are eligalbe for a free, one-year SPSS license.  Visit the University Help Desk for more information.

Gretl

An open source software program with a graphical-user interface.  More information about Gretl.  (Tip: Use links on left-hand side of screen to download; most users do not want to download the current source package.)

R

An open source software program with a command-line interface.  More information about R.

OCTAVE

A free version of Matlab.  More information about Octave.
