* Students must complete ECON 201 and ECON 202 (or ECON 235) with a grade of "B" or better. Students earning less than a B in any of these classes are allowed one attempt to retake and achieve the minimum grade.
** As an alternative to taking the Comprehensive Exam, the Department of Economics also offers a Thesis option, which is available to students who are in the M.A. program. Students interested in pursuing the Thesis option are responsible for finding a Thesis adviser and assembling a committee. Generally, students who do not have a GPA of at least 3.5 should not expect to be able to assemble a thesis committee. In practice, student participation in the Thesis option is rare. However, this does not mean that the Department does not emphasize writing skills--all MA students write a full-length manuscript as a part of the required course, ECON 205B, and many field courses require class papers. Each year many of our non-thesis students publish essays for scholarly and general audiences.
The masters program prepares graduates for research and policy positions in government and business. Our teaching and research stress the importance of markets and institutions on political and socioeconomic outcomes. Although we emphasize applied economics, we also guide students in the rigorous preparation necessary for doctoral programs at such universities as George Mason University, Washington University, Carlton University, Northwestern University, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine and Stanford University.
