Through the generous contributions of supporters, foundations and alumni the Department of Economics is able to offer two research paper competitions: Annual Best Paper Competition and Semiannual Best Paper Proposal Competitions.
Open Group Academic Program
The Open Group Academic Program is a pilot program at San Jose State’s Economics Department to help promote and encourage students to become certified in and use Open Group and Open FAIR standards to help emerging practitioners develop qualifications before they graduate. The Program also seeks to provide students with valuable work experience.

Honors and Awards
Students can apply for the Economics Departmental Honors program, if awarded they will be honored at the Department Awards Ceremony. The Department has three perpetual award plaques to recognize outstanding students and alumni. Faculty members nominate and select the award recipients: James F. Willis Award for Excellence in Economics, Rodolfo Gonzalez Award for Outstanding Alumni, and the David S. Saurman Most Valuable Player in the Department. Find out more about our Honors and Awards.
